RECORDED AND ASSEMBLED 2017-2018
subjective narrative and oral history for transmission
interview, sound design, and improvisation
Focusing around recorded conversations between myself, my mother, and my grandmother; in which we discussed what life was like before, during, and after WW2, as well as growing up through the Blitz.
However, due to my Grandma's struggle with dementia, these accounts become refracted and warped. Highlighting the way her sense of self and perception of time are affected by the disease.
Through the use of sound design and composition, I aimed to portray the subjective inner world that my grandma inhabits. Representing the ebb and flow of confusion that intermittently manifests during our discussion. As well as the emotions that I and my family feel when seeing how she is changing.
My goal is to show what dementia can teach you about a person's history, by highlighting the important stories that remain after the mind deteriorates.

I am honored to have been able to document these discussions, I will cherish them always.
Special thanks to my mother, Alyson Smith, for being part of the interview process and sharing those precious moments with me and Grandma. As well as my family and friends for helping me through the struggles that come with work of this nature.
Dedicated to the past, present, and future mind of Gwen Newman, as well as the family that she helped create.
