Electroacoustic post-rock and free jazz homunculi
2 x Single / EP / Mini-Album
Two tracks that have been kicking around for far too long in various states of gestation; my early outings working with other musicians and forays into overt genre references - in particular post-rock, free improvisation, minimalism, spiritual jazz, and metal.
ANHINGA - 'Snake Bird' - a large waterbird with a long tail, a long S-shaped neck, and a daggerlike bill.
Built around two serendipitous recordings; Two guitar/looper experiments that happened to perfectly sync up, and an improvisation with an Ebow slowly running out of battery.
Sonder - n. the realization that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own.
A skeleton of a drum improvisation (reacting to field recordings and cello loops) scaffolded by post-produced layers of what inspired it, and my own electronic/cello reactions to the structure that emerged.
---------------
I initially wanted this project to act as a follow-up to Salvaged Space (2018) as my first release under the moniker Fermata Ark. With the 'Ark' nodding to the Sun Ra Arkestra and signifying the project opening up to include outside musical influences and collaborators.
Alas, this period of my life would pass without these tracks emerging. Despite these pieces retaining all the original musical material and arrangements from their inception, I simply lacked the skills at the time to finalize them. Instead, they would be looked at intermittently and embellished over the following years, including field recordings from New York in 2018, and overdubs/processing during my time at Greenhouse Studios (2018-2019).
I do regret these not making their way out into the real world sooner, but it is safe to say that they were important experiments that paved the way for projects such as Thus or the SNUTCH album. Better late than never.
Special thanks to the soloists who helped bring these pieces to life, I'm sure you have both completely forgotten about it in the interim but either way, I really appreciate your work.
